Due to rain in the morning and even a thunderstorm in the afternoon teams had to their programme for today. In addition the ever changing weather conditions led to substantial differences in lap times.
Heikki joined the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes test team for the final session of the intensive four day test. Rain began to fall minutes before the start of morning running and continued for much of the day. A short let-up after lunch saw Heikki take to the track for 40 minutes before a thunderstorm arrived at the Circuit de Catalunya, followed by hailstones. When this cleared, the team carried on testing between the showers with very little running in the dry. When the track dried up in the afternoon Robert Kubica continued to work on setups and aerodynamical solutions for the forthcoming Spanish Grand Prix. When the rain set in again the team took the chance to collect more data with the car running on wet tyres. The Honda Racing F1 Team today concluded its four-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. Jenson Button joined the team to take over the driving responsibilities in the Honda RA108 for the final day. Unfortunately running was continuously interrupted by heavy rain showers which drenched the track, restricting Jenson to a single installation lap in the morning and only limited running on wet tyres for a further 41 laps in the afternoon session. After three days of successful dry testing, the rain finally arrived on cue this morning at the Circuit de Catalunya. Shortly after Jarno Trulli completed his installation lap the heavens opened and the circuit was drenched by heavy rain that continued throughout the morning. The downpour stopped at lunchtime, after which the teams ventured out onto the track. Unfortunately more showers followed, further shortening the running time in the afternoon. Unlike other teams, Jarno did no running on dry tyres. The Toyota team will return here next week for the Spanish Grand Prix. Jarno Trulli - Chassis TF108-05 "We knew that rain was forecast for today so we didn't expect to be able to make too much progress. When we finally did some running we put in a few laps of wet set-up but with the track changing so much it is always hard to draw too many conclusions. When we return here next week the conditions will be different again. But we have had some solid days of testing here this year so we can head into the race with confidence." Gerd Pfeiffer, Test Team Manager "Our weather forecasts were unfortunately accurate so the rain has been the major factor today. We were expecting it but as always it makes meaningful testing difficult. After lunch we did some brief work on wet set-up to try and learn what we could. The week's test has nevertheless been useful and we have prepared well for next week's Spanish Grand Prix." Nelson Piquet had taken over from Fernando Alonso for the final day and planned to run slick Bridgestone tyres this morning. But with the poor weather conditions the team was forced to revise its plans and it was not until late in the afternoon that a dry line appeared. However, the team made the most of the limited running to give Nelson some further experience on wet weather tyres. Despite the loss of valuable track time today, the team has enjoyed a productive week in Barcelona and achieved most of the objectives for the test. Attention now turns to the Spanish Grand Prix next week, where the team will look to build on the success of this week’s efforts. Nelson Piquet: “It was a shame that it was so wet today as we could only do limited running. The rain stopped after lunch and the track was beginning to dry, but then there was another shower in the middle of the afternoon which made it difficult to do much else. But for the final hour or so the track was not in bad shape and we completed a good amount of laps. Overall the test has been a good one and we have done a lot of work to be in good shape for the Spanish Grand Prix next week.” Christian Silk, Chief Test Engineer: “The rain was really heavy this morning and so we lost a lot of track time. But after lunch the rain held off for a bit and we were able to send Nelson out to get some more miles on the car. Although we were not able to learn much today, we have enjoyed a productive week overall, and the whole team has worked hard to make sure we are well prepared for the race here next week.” Dickie Stanford, Test Team Manager Williams F1: |
